Tanuki restaurant was created by two born and raised Markham locals who have travelled extensively through the back alleys of Asia, looking for the most unique and interesting flavours. 

After many years of working at some of the top restaurants and hotels in the city, the chefs at Tanuki have returned to their roots to create a modern take on Japanese comfort food, using local seasonal produce and a strong inspiration from Markham culture.

Meet the Chefs

Chris Samaroo

Chris has worked in the hospitality industry for the past 17 years,  apprenticing and working in some of the top hotels and restaurants in Toronto.  Chris has travelled extensively across Asia, eating his way from one town to the other.

John-Francis Dugas

John-Francis watched too much anime as a young boy and struggled to do well in school. The guidance counselor at his local high school told him a career in Culinary Arts or Tool and Die Maker were the only options. He chose cooking.
